Pinehurst Village plants a Liberty Tree as part of the America 250th year observance
The Village of Pinehurst marked a milestone Friday morning with the dedication of a Liberty Tree at Marshall Park, honoring the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States of America.
The brief dedication ceremony, held on January 30th, at 10 a.m., was led by Mayor Patrick Pizzella, who reflected on the historical significance of the original Liberty Tree and the enduring ideals it represents.
“The Liberty Tree stands as a symbol of courage, resistance, and the belief that ordinary people can shape their own future,” Mayor Pizzella said in a press release. “By planting this tree today, we are creating a living legacy—one that reminds us that liberty is not just a moment in history, but an ongoing responsibility.”
The Liberty Tree tradition dates back to 1765, when an elm tree in Boston became a rallying point for early resistance to British rule. Though the original tree was cut down in 1775, its legacy has endured for centuries as a symbol of freedom and civic engagement.
Pinehurst’s Liberty Tree is a Liberty Oak, field-grown in Liberty, North Carolina, by a family-owned nursery established in 1912 and now operated by its third and fourth generations. Village leaders noted the significance of the tree’s local roots and long-standing stewardship.
During the ceremony, Pizzella unveiled a granite plaque commemorating the dedication. The marker reads:“This landmark tree, planted on the 30th day of January 2026 in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, symbolizes the Village of Pinehurst’s enduring spirit of liberty, continuity, strength, and the power of the people.”
The Liberty Tree dedication at Marshall Park is part of Pinehurst’s broader America 250 observance, which will continue through 2026 with programs and events designed to encourage reflection on the nation’s founding principles and shared civic responsibility.
The Village invites residents and visitors alike to visit Marshall Park and view the Liberty Tree.
