Sandhills Compatriot, MAJ (Ret) Chuck Spelman and Chairman of our Veterans Recognition Committee has located the gravesite of Moore County Revolutionary War Patriot, Lt. Thomas Matthews in Vass,NC. This search has been ongoing for well over a year. Kudos to Chuck for his personal tenacity and staying focused on finding this Patriot. Chuck spent many hours speaking with folks at the Vass Town Hall, Fire & Police Department employees, local homeowners, and driving many miles around Vass and the surrounding area.

This gravesite is located about 1/4 mile back in the woods, off of N. Alma St. Vass, NC (County Rd.#- 2005) on private land. Chuck is working to connect with the current property owners to obtain permission for Sandhills SAR Chapter to visit the site. Chuck has obtained the GPS Location for this gravesite, so that we can share it with the folks at the Vass Town Hall and family descendants of Lt. Thomas Matthews.

The owners have erected an informational covered kiosk near the gravesite that posts a number of informational documents about the life of Lt. Matthews.

Thank You Chuck, from all our Compatriots and for all your work on the Sandhills Veterans Recognition Committee. Locating this gravesite was not easy at all. But, You did IT!

We hope to organize a SAR Patriot Gravesite Marking ceremony in the future.
